First Step Records

Millikin University Student Presentation

In its seventh year of production, First Step is a student operated record label and publishing company providing hands-on experience in the business of music. Located at Millikin University in Decatur, the label seeks to provide opportunities for students, faculty, and alumni artists. In the last seven years, First Step Records has released 27 CD's, including recordings of Millikin's Vespers Concert, the award-winning OneVoice Vocal Ensemble, the renowned University Choir, the MU Guitar Ensemble, MU Jazz Band, MU Percussion Ensemble, the Wind Ensemble, faculty solo and ensemble projects, as well as two student projects. In 2004, First Step launched a new publishing company to work hand in hand with the record label, carrying a catalogue of 15-20 works written and arranged by Millikin professors and alumni available for license. New CD's such as the Latin Jazz Percussion Project, the Beatnix (a faculty ensemble), and Gravitacion (a faculty vocal ensemble specializing in Renaissance literature) are all due to be released in the spring of 2006.
